Sporting KC calls in League Pool Goalkeeper Trey Mitchell

Trey Mitchell

Sporting Kansas City has called in League Pool Goalkeeper Trey Mitchell for tonight's match at Orlando City SC.

Mitchell, 24, signed with reigning MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy in March and has since served as a League Pool Goalkeeper, previously joining D.C. United (May 1) and the Philadelphia Union (May 7). In 2014, Mitchell was a member of the Chivas USA Under-23's and Ventura County Fusion (PDL) after playing for FC Hasental (NPSL) a year earlier.

Mitchell began playing soccer at age 18 as a senior at Alta Loma High School and continued his career with two seasons at Citrus College, where he recorded 81 saves with a 2.09 goals against average. He then transferred to Cal State Dominguez Hills, competing in both golf and soccer. After redshirting for the Toros men's soccer program in 2012, Mitchell made 20 starts and recorded 71 saves for a 0.85 goals against average from 2013-2014.

Mitchell, who has also served on the coaching staffs at Pepperdine University and Hollywood FC, joins Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia as the only two active MLS goalkeepers to come from NCAA Division II college programs. Melia, a League Pool Goalkeeper last year, signed with Sporting KC prior to the 2015 season and has started each of the club's last 18 MLS matches, going 9-5-4 with seven shutouts and a 1.28 goals against average.

Sporting Kansas City will face Orlando City SC at 6 p.m. CT tonight at the Florida Citrus Bowl. The match will be nationally televised on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes.
