#TBT: Relive Sporting Kansas City’s MLS Cup triumphs from 2000 and 2013

2013 MLS Cup trophy celebration - Sporting KC vs. Real Salt Lake - Dec. 7, 2013

The curtains will close on Major League Soccer’s 24th season Sunday when Seattle Sounders FC hosts Toronto FC in MLS Cup 2019. Kickoff at CenturyLink Field is set for 2 p.m. CT with national television coverage on ABC and Univision.

As another MLS campaign concludes with two perennial contenders battling for the title, it seems like as good of a time as any to relive the two most epic chapters in Sporting Kansas City history.

In 2000 and 2013, Kansas City reached the pinnacle of MLS by claiming dramatic, nail-biting victories on the league’s grandest stage.

The Wizards opened the millennium in stunning style, navigating a worst-to-first season under head coach Bob Gansler and defeating the heavily favored Chicago Fire by a 1-0 scoreline at MLS Cup 2000 in Washington, D.C. Thirteen years later, Sporting were in heaven once more as manager Peter Vermes guided his side to an unforgettable penalty shootout win over Real Salt Lake at electric—albeit freezing—Children’s Mercy Park.

In a nod to Throwback Thursday, relive both of the club’s MLS Cup victories below.
