Sporting Kansas City will face Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the MLS is Back Tournament Round of 16 on Sunday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Walt Disney World. Kickoff is set for 10 p.m. CT with live coverage on FS1, TUDN, FOX Deportes, the FOX Sports app, Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.


A first-place finish in Group D has sent Sporting Kansas City to the MLS is Back Tournament Knockout Stage, which will see 16 clubs compete in a single-elimination bracket through the tournament final on Aug. 11. Vancouver booked its place in the knockout phase with a third-place finish in Group B, having secured a vital 2-0 win over Chicago Fire FC this morning.



Sporting last faced the Whitecaps on opening day of the 2020 MLS campaign in Vancouver. Alan Pulido, Gadi Kinda and Erik Hurtado scored goals to pace a 3-1 triumph at BC Place as Sporting improved to 10-3-4 in the regular season series.


MLS is Back Tournament Knockout Stage games won’t count toward the regular season table, but the champion of the competition will qualify for the 2021 Concacaf Champions League and receive a sizable share of a $1.1 million prize pool. Round of 16 fixtures will run from Saturday to Tuesday, followed by the Quarterfinals from July 30 – Aug. 1, the Semifinals on Aug. 5-6 and the Final on Aug. 11.

Occupying first place in the Western Conference standings, Sporting opened the MLS is Back Tournament with a 2-1 loss to Minnesota on July 12 but responded with a 3-2 win over Colorado on July 17. Sporting’s three group stage matches in the MLS is Back Tournament count toward the 2020 MLS regular season table. The club owns a 4-1-0 record and sits one point behind Columbus Crew SC in the Supporters’ Shield race.
