Recap: Sporting KC II suffers 4-0 loss to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC

Sporting Kansas City II (0-2-1, 1 point) suffered a 4-0 loss to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (1-1-0, 3 points) on Friday night at Children’s Mercy Park.

Former Sporting KC II forward Hadji Barry struck twice against his former club to lead Switchbacks FC, who also received goals from Austin Dewing and Michee Ngalina to snap a four-game losing streak to SKC II in the USL Championship.

Head coach Paulo Nagamaura made three changes to the Sporting Kansas City II starting XI from last week’s 1-1 home draw against OKC Energy FC as Petar Cuic, Jake Davis and Ropapa Mensah replaced Jahon Rad, Cam Duke and Wilson Harris, respectively. Mensah’s appearance marked his club debut in a lineup that featured five Sporting KC Academy products and seven players on loan from Sporting’s first team.

Switchbacks FC threatened early and often as Barry rattled the crossbar and forced an outstanding save from SKC II goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh within four minutes of kickoff. The visitors landed their breakthrough shortly thereafter, however, as Ngalina squared low for Dewing to poke home on the doorstep in the sixth minute.

McIntosh produced another excellent stop in the 20th minute, thwarting Ngalina on the breakaway, but Colorado Springs would ultimately add to their lead with successful penalty kicks from Barry and Ngalina in the 28th and 35th minutes. SKC II saw their fortunes worsen six minutes before intermission when center back Matt Constant was issued a red card for violent conduct.

Danny Barbir and Christian Duke were summoned as second-half reinforcements for Sporting KC II, with Enoch Mushagalusa, Rojay Smith and Jayvin Van Deventer also coming off the bench after the break. Nagamura’s men improved in the second period but were breached for a fourth goal in the 63rd minute when Barry slotted into the corner off an Ngalina through ball.

Mushagalusa wasted no time impacting proceedings with SKC II’s first shot on target midway through the half, and although the hosts wound up with 11 shot attempts, none of them beat Colorado Springs goalkeeper Andrew Pannenberg.

SKC II will look to bounce back Wednesday night with a West Coast visit to LA Galaxy II. Kickoff at Dignity Health Sports Park is set for 9:30 p.m. CT and the game will stream live on ESPN Plus.
