Five years ago today, Sporting Kansas City defeated a longtime rival they were scheduled to meet this Saturday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
On May 29, 2015, Children's Mercy Park was treated to a 4-0 hammering of FC Dallas as Graham Zusi, Benny Feilhaber, Krisztian Nemeth and Kevin Ellis each found the back of the net to help Sporting extend their unbeaten streak to six regular season matches at the time. Zusi was the near-unanimous man of the match, adding two assists to go with his 64th-minute tally.
The hosts were ruthless in front of goal and stingy in defense, with goalkeeper Tim Melia needing to make just one save en route to the shutout. In doing so, Melia improved to 3-0-2 as the team's starter and became the second goalkeeper all-time to go without a loss in his first five appearances for Kansas City.
The Friday night victory was Peter Vermes' 100th coaching win in all competitions for the club, coming at the expense of an FC Dallas side that was reduced to 10 men on the brink of halftime when veteran Zach Loyd received his second yellow card.
This would be the first of two occasions in which Sporting beat FC Dallas by a four-goal margin in 2015. The clubs squared off at Children's Mercy Park over a month later in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16, which saw Sporting explode for a 6-2 win behind a four-goal salvo from Dom Dwyer and a Nemeth brace.
